Users Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using these drugs must be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally experience a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Users who have discontinued the jabs report a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a switch activating and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural support.
