Federal Reserve Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
