A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's major government projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” declared the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party called for an prompt halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
